Be Kind To Yourself

January 22, 2014 8 Comments

Being kind to ourselves is one of many things in life that is simple, but not always so easy.  I posted a quote on Facebook last week from Brené Brown along these lines, “Talk to yourself like you would to someone you love,” which got a lot of response.

I’ve been thinking a lot about this important topic for many years, especially in the past few months.  And while I understand the importance and value of being kind toward myself, it isn’t always easy to practice.  However, when we are kind to ourselves, it has a positive impact on every aspect of our lives and on everyone around us.

Check out the video below where I talk about how we can be more kind toward ourselves.  Feel free to leave a comment about how this relates to you and what you do to practice self-kindness (or any questions you have) here on my blog.

I enjoyed all of your comments. I have never really thought of being kind to myself because I am so busy being nice to others.
I will work towards being kind to myself.

    Hi Mike,
I enjoyed your video and I’m going to practice being more kind to myself. Something that you mentioned that really makes me feel better about myself, is being kind to others. I have found recently so much road rage in our area. I am trying to be an extremely courteous driver by letting people over when a turn signal is on, stopping and letting people out of driveways, smiling at people next to me, etc. I was waiting for a parking place the other day when a lady didn’t see me and backed right in to me. She was so upset and I tried to comfort her that it was no big deal and neither of us got hurt. These random acts of kindness are making me feel better about myself.
Thanks for your blogs & videos, I really have enjoyed them.
    Best,
    SM

As I get older, I’m starting to realize the best way to be kind to yourself is to prioritize your health over everything else. Tell your co-workers in advance that a certain time during the day is reserved for going to the gym, and stick to it. Watch what you eat – indulge once in a while, but not all the time. Take some time to unwind and do something you really enjoy (not because you HAVE to do it). Yes, definitely easier said than done, but if you make a conscious effort, you can do it!

Hi Mike! Thanks for the great vlog. You always manage to get down to subjects we never think of like being kind to ourselves. Seems like a simple concept, but as you stated we often have a tendency to think negatively about ourselves. We even go so far as to say unkind things about ourselves on a daily basis. That can’t be a good thing and isn’t healthy behavior for growth. It’s time to start being kind to myself on purpose and thinking kind thoughts about who I am and what I want. The nurturing of self is a key area that I plan to focus on this year. Have a great day 🙂

Thanks Cindy! Yes, sadly we do say unkind things to ourselves and about ourselves. Self-kindness is a practice! Have fun…

I know it sounds silly, but I hug myself several times a day. My best friend sent me something recently that said all hugs should be 20 seconds or longer for maximizing oxytocin release. So I have lengthened my hugs to myself and others. An easy way to spread the love!

Mike, Since I saw your You tube about being authentic, I have been a follower of your works.

It has taken me to the deeps of my soul and i’m still trying to get out. i have this crazy self talk that has kept me in pain. I believe in the process and I know i need to learn before I come out of this phase. I am grateful for you Mike and your messages. Today is the day I start to “LOVE ME”..!!!

    Thank you very much Mike..!!

    Hi Mike:
So loved this talk. it really hit home. I also just followed it up by listening to a few of your Ted talks. WoW!! Just what I needed to re-inspire me to continue being who I am at work in my HR capacity. My purpose in life: Is to assist others in being the best they can be, whatever that may be. I realized I have to be as kind to myself and have as much self love as I have love for others.
    Thanks
    Ginny
