The Power of an Ordinary Summer

Summer has a way of changing our perspective.

The days get a little longer. Schedules often loosen up, at least somewhat. Kids are out of school, vacations appear on the calendar, and there can be a different rhythm to life.

And yet, even during a season that’s supposed to invite us to slow down, many of us continue to race ahead. We focus on the next thing we need to accomplish, the next place we need to be, the next milestone we’re chasing. We convince ourselves that we’ll relax once we get through this week, this project, this season.

But lately, I’ve been reminded of something simple.

Some of the most meaningful moments of our lives don’t seem particularly meaningful while they’re happening.

They’re ordinary.

A conversation at the dinner table that goes on longer than expected. A walk through the neighborhood after a long day. Sitting outside with people we love as the sun starts to set. Hearing our kids tell stories about their day. Catching up with an old friend. Drinking our coffee or tea in the quiet before the rest of the house wakes up.

None of these moments are likely to make the highlight reel of our lives. We don’t usually document them or celebrate them. From the outside, they don’t appear especially remarkable.

And yet, when I think about some of my favorite memories, they’re often built from experiences just like these.

Of course, the big moments matter too. I’ve been fortunate to have some extraordinary experiences in my life and career that I’m deeply grateful for. But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that life isn’t lived primarily in those peak moments.

It’s lived in the spaces in between.

It’s found in the routines, the conversations, the laughter, the presence we bring to the people around us.

I think part of wisdom is recognizing that we don’t have to wait for life to become extraordinary before we allow ourselves to enjoy it.

This season of your life, whatever it looks like, isn’t simply something to get through on your way to something better. It is your life.

So as you move through this summer, I invite you to slow down enough to notice it.

What ordinary moments might you be rushing past?

What simple parts of your day bring you joy that you’ve started to take for granted?

How can you be a little more present with the people and places that matter most?

You don’t have to create the perfect summer or make unforgettable memories every single day.

Maybe it’s enough to put your phone down for a while. Stay at the table a little longer. Take the walk. Watch the sunset. Say yes to the conversation.

Because one day, there’s a good chance that what feels ordinary right now will be exactly what we miss the most.

And perhaps that’s the real power of an ordinary summer.
