If you’ve ever attended a play, sporting event, or concert, chances are you paid primary attention to the people on the stage or field, but not as much to all the people behind the scenes working to pull off what made the event so fantastic. Whether it’s an organization of 3 people or a group of 3,000, we thrive at work when everyone does their part. On this week’s episode, we talk about teamwork and collaboration, the distinction between our job and our role, why we must embrace the specific role we have and appreciate others if we’re going to be able to win and sustain success.
[5:36] During a recent trip to see the Broadway Show Anastasia, I couldn’t help but notice the amazing people that went into the whole production. The lead star was important, but the “support cast” of the orchestra, costumes, lighting also all helped to make this story so captivating. This is a metaphor for work — sometimes we are the star, often times we are supporting the mission. Whatever level it’s at, it’s important to recognize that everyone’s role matters.
[10:43] Every role is fundamental in the overall collective.
[13:31] There is a difference between our job and our role. Our job is to help the team win. Our role is the actual set of skills and responsibilities we have within our organization.
[16:57] Sometimes we like our role and feel it’s a fit for our level of qualifications; other times we wish we were somewhere else. We must determine if our role is something we can make work for us and if not, move on towards one that is. Whining does us and our team no good.
[18:37] Our first team is the team we are a member of, and the second team is the one we manage. When you get leadership teams that are aligned, collaboration and accountability flow easily.
[23:01] Not only are we in this together, but operating from that place makes us thrive. One of the most powerful ways we can do that is to appreciate each other.
[28:41] When we show people our appreciation, it makes them feel valuable in their role.
