How Do You Handle Criticism?

August 19, 2015 10 Comments

I’ve received some criticism in the past couple of weeks in a few different situations.  This has caused me to step back and reflect on how I handle criticism.  Although I tend to get quite defensive when people criticize me, I’ve actually been pleasantly surprised by how I’ve reacted.

In this video blog I talk about criticism and offer some thoughts, ideas, and tips for how we can handle it more effectively…as well as ways to not let the fear of being criticized stop us from putting ourselves out there, taking risks, and going for what we truly want.

Check out the video below and feel free to leave a comment on my blog about it. And, if there are people in your life or your social networks whom you think would resonate with this message, you’re welcome to share it with them.

Mike — This is an excellent video blog post, and it comes to me at just the right time. (The student was ready, and the teacher appeared!) I spent many years as a news journalist during the first part of my career, and I’m proud of the work that I did, but to some degree I was NOT “the man in the arena.” Now that I’m running my own business (in the PR field), I suddenly AM “in the arena,” and I need to be able to take criticism/feedback in the right way. Your observations in this video are very helpful, and I’m sure that this will help me have a more empowering perspective towards criticism/feedback. Thanks!

Mike I am so in awe with your content on this video.

Very true on how we perceive criticism I know this all too well for I am
very sensitive and have led the last 50 years of my life worrying about
how or what people think of me.
I have felt I had no voice and kept it inside for many years due to my upbringing.
I had a dream for 50 years to write a novel based on my life but in a non fiction manner. I have started with a blog and will post snip its of each chapter has I write.
I admire your philosophy on life and how you have put it forth for all of us.
I have mentioned you on my blog about your books. Look forward to meeting you in February at ICDI Seattle.
    Much Gratitude
    Roberta

Mike, Great post and I continue to be impressed with your insights into topics that resonate in my life. First, thank you. I recently was given a rather strong critique of my work style about how I relating to others on our leadership team and it’s impact on me really kind of “rocked” me to the core. It came out of left field, as I wasn’t really attuned to how I was being perceived, but I had no choice but to face the feedback. I had all the reactions you expressed in your blog post, but the most unexpected emotion for me was one of profound gratitude. What a gift I had been given to work on changing myself and to ensure that I would still be working at a place that I have come to love being at each day. I did share some feedback to my boss and that was that I had wished he had done it sooner. We are at a good place of trust and working together now. I believe he felt better after he shared his thoughts and feelings also. Thank you again for sharing. Dee
